FLY Tandem with Wingsports!
 What is a Tandem Flight?
A Tandem Flight is a wonderful experience; one
that you will never forget! You will fly as a passenger in one of our
certified tandem gliders (especially designed to carry 2 people).
You will soar the sky in a magnificent
flight where you are not required to do anything other than take a few
paces, enjoy yourself and have the instructor control the craft and
explain how the glider works. You, the passenger, need no experience
whatsoever as the entire flight will be controlled by our instructor
. In some situations if you wish, when it is safe
and suitable, you may be given the opportunity to take control from time
to time during the flight in order to get the sensation of flying solo. Of
course, the experience of our instructor is right there with you. The
actual intent of a tandem flight is that of a trail-instructional flight
which hopefully inspires some passengers to take up the sport.

Legal requirements of flying passengers in Tandem
Flights are as follows:
Pilot in
command must be a certified flying
instructor.
 Our
Instructors
lAircraft must
be a purpose-built certified tandem aircraft
lFlight must be
an instructional flight through a registered training facility
 | What does the Passenger need to do? |
On a physical level, flying in our microlite requires nothing from you
except to be seated in the back behind the instructor.
Our tandem Paraglider and hangglider are un-powered and are launched off a mountain.
We only fly tandem flights in weather conditions that will require only a
few paces to take-off . This way it is easy for the passenger. A
high level of fitness is not required, only normal mobility. Landings are
very gentle and easy. It is likely that you will not even have to take any
steps. If you have a physical disability or restriction of some kind, you
can discuss it with us as to your suitability as a tandem passenger.
| Weather Conditions for Tandem Flights. |
You need a certain level of patience here if you
are to enjoy a great flight with us. Un-powered paragliders and
hang gliders are by nature descending craft. This means that if we are to
fly around up high, we must fly in air that is rising. This "lift"
as it is called exists either on the coast when the breeze is blowing up
the hills or inland via thermals (warm rising air parcels). Coastal lift
tends to be smooth and constant where thermal lift can be rougher. For
this reason we prefer to fly tandem passengers on the coast as the
passenger can find rough thermal air a bit disconcerting.
On a given day we will choose the appropriate
aircraft to fly based on the day’s weather conditions. On some days we
cannot fly any of them.
| What should you wear as a Tandem Passenger? |
Even on a warm day in summer, things get pretty
cool up in the air, especially when you are flying through it at 30km/h!
So, you should be prepared with warm clothing. Comfortable loose fitting
clothes such as warm track pants or jeans with sports shoes are the best
idea. A windproof jacket with a warm jumper underneath is highly
recommended. Wingsports has flying jackets and suits available for your
use.
| What are the Weight, Size and Age restrictions
for Passengers? |
Age is not a problem so long as you have
normal mobility. If you are not so good on your feet the microlite will
suit you well. Children under the age of 18 will require their parents’
or guardians’ consent.
Passengers in unpowered craft should preferably
be under 90kg in weight. Smaller passengers should preferably be over 50
kg in weight. These limitations can be extended slightly conditions
permitting. Very large or small people will fare
better in our powered microlite.

How to Book a Tandem Flight. |
Due to the weather dependant nature of our
operations, we cannot make bookings a long way in advance. If you have in
mind a particular weekend or day/s that you would like to fly, we can
pencil it in but the booking is in no way confirmed until the night
before those days or that weekend.
So as to avoid needless disappointment you
need to call us on 0419-378616 on the previous evening when we have an up
to date weather prediction. If the weather does not look promising, we
will save you a wasted trip to beautifull Apollo Bay.
It is our experience that people that are
staying in our area, Apollo Bay, for a couple of days tend to have
the best flights in the optimum conditions. It is unrealistic for
example to consider driving down here (2 ½ hours drive from Melbourne) on
a particular day that you have in mind to do a flight at 1.15 PM so that
you can be back in Melbourne for a barbeque at 6pm. It just doesn’t work
that way!!
